23 Avenue Interchange Project

The 2010 construction season continues. Please see the Schedule and Phasing page for the current construction bulletin. Please refer to 23 Ave 2010 Construction Schedule for this seasons details.

On Sunday, September 27, 2009 westbound and eastbound traffic along 23 Avenue has been moved onto the new westbound bridge across Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard and the CPR tracks. As a result:

  • Traffic from 23 Avenue has been routed onto the 23 Avenue westbound bridge while construction continues on the eastbound bridge.
  • Traffic signals have been removed along Calgary Trail and Gateway Boulevard to allow free flow traffic below 23 Avenue.
  • Gateway Boulevard northbound is accessible from westbound or eastbound on 23 Avenue.
  • 23 Avenue eastbound or westbound are accessible from Calgary Trail southbound.
  • There is no access from Gateway Boulevard northbound onto eastbound or westbound 23 Avenue. Recommended detour routes have been signed.
  • There is no access from eastbound or westbound 23 Avenue to Calgary Trail southbound. Motorists are advised to use Ellerslie Road, Anthony Henday Drive, 34 Avenue, 111 Street and 91 Street as alternate routes. Recommended detour routes have been signed.
  • Eastbound traffic along 23 Avenue over Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard has been realigned for two through lanes and one dedicated left turn lane northbound.
  • Westbound traffic along 23 Avenue over Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard has been realigned for one through lane with a right turn lane northbound prior to the bridge.
  • Pedestrian access across the interchange is by the sidewalk along the north side of 23 Avenue across Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard and across 23 Avenue at 99 Street.
  • Peak hours are 05:30 to 09:00 (AM peak) and 15:30 to 21:00 (PM peak)
  • Commuters are encouraged to plan their routes in advance and give themselves extra time to get to their destination.
  • Please drive with care and give construction crews room to work safely.
  • The speed limit will continue to be 50km/hour to ensure the safety of motorists and workers on-site. Speeding fines are double in construction zones.

City of Edmonton Construction Update

Introduction

The City of Edmonton has retained Team ISL, led by ISL Engineering and Land Services, to provide the engineering and related professional services for the preliminary design, detailed design and construction administration of the 23 Avenue/Gateway Boulevard Interchange project. The interchange configuration will be based on the recommendations presented in the icon Concept Plan (388.75 kB) that began in 2001. The final interchange configuration has  been modofied based on the recommendations presented in the icon Final Concept Plan (1.69 MB).
